The 2027 edition. First run in printing.

The Drift Year journal, warm white cover with terracotta type reading Who What Where When Why above the wordmark.

The question

You learnt the five W's when you were about eight. Then you left school and never used them again.

Drift Year asks one question instead of five. Answer it properly and the five come out on their own — where you went, who you saw, what you did, when, and how it felt. That is simply how a day comes out when you tell it.

Every page

What happened today?

One question, then room to answer it. Twenty lines in the A5, twenty-six in the A4.

Why it exists

Seventy nights in, I couldn't remember the previous Tuesday.

Drift Year wasn't designed and then tested. I kept a journal every night for over seventy nights without missing one, and somewhere in there it stopped being a habit and started being a thing worth making properly.

Not goals. Not gratitude. Not a scoring system for your own life. Just the day, written down before it goes.

A single dated page from inside the journal: the day's number, the weekday, the question, and ruled lines.
One page per day, dated. No prompts to fill in, no boxes to tick.

The elements

The year turns over four times.

For most of recorded history people explained the world with four things. They were wrong about the chemistry and right about something else — that a life runs on a few simple forces, turning over and over. Each quarter of the book opens on one of them.

The four quarter-opening pages inside the journal: fire in terracotta, water in deep blue, earth in sage, air in ochre.

Fire

January — March

The start of things. The year is cold and you make your own heat.

Water

April — June

What moves, and takes the shape of whatever is holding it.

Earth

July — September

What stays. The quiet half of the year, when the work is already underway.

Air

October — December

What you cannot see and cannot do without. So is memory.

The edition

One year, two sizes.

The A5 is the one you carry and keep by the bed. The A4 gives you half as much page again for each day. Both run the full year — a page for every one of the 365 days, dated, in order.
